Spoiler Alert

I’m all excited about the eyepatch movie, Valkyrie. The two quotes below sent me over the edge: Now I want to see it.
Soon, we’re going to have friends visiting: Bitz & Bobs. To make sure they don’t get bored I’m putting together a list of activities including a big night out at the movies with Tom Cruise.
It’s all about fun, fun, fun.

Why didn’t I see this earlier?

Sometimes even I am not as gay as I want to be. I had never watched Mommie Dearest until 2 days ago when I rented a copy of the re-released DVD. On Monday, I watched it for the first time, yesterday, I’ve seen it with the John Waters audio commentary switched on.

Mommie Dearest is considered a gay camp classic. It was the big winner at the Razzies in 1981, taking home 5 awards of the 9 nominations. This is always a good sign.

The film is based on the book written by Christina Crawford, the adopted daughter of actress Joan Crawford. The book was one of the first tell-all stories about the childhood and relationship with a celebrity mother.

Many scenes in this movie reminded me of the John Waters classic, Female Trouble, which was shot before Mommie Dearest. The scenes when Christina childplays an actress, her mother, brought the car accident Taffy plays in Female Trouble to my mind. Or when Taffy gets beat and strangled by Divine, there are scences like this with Joan and Christina Crawford. I think there is a lot of Taffy in this film. And just imagine Joan Crawford played by Divine instead of Faye Dunaway.

The film has more great moments for your pleasure and I don’t want to give anymore details away, just in case you are like me and havn’t seen the flick. But the ax and the wire hangers scenes are probably the best known excerpts and they certainly shoot Mommie Dearest over the top.

If you happen to be in San Francisco in August, be sure to go to Peaches Christ Midnight Mass screening of the movie. The evening includes the performance of Trannie Dearest, a play by Peaches Christ and Heklina. This is going to be hilarious!

Razzies

Zwei meiner absoluten Lieblingsfilme haben bei den Razzies / der Goldene Himbeere in der Vergangenheit abgeräumt:

1986: UNDER THE CHERRY MOON – 8 Nominations / 4 Wins (One Shared)

Der tolle Film mit Prince und Kristin Scott Thomas in den Hauptrollen und Michael Ballhaus an der Kamera. Gefilmt in Farbe, veröffentlicht in Schwarz/Weiss und mit der Parade LP als Soundtrack (Kiss, Mountains). Prince und sein entzückender Freund Jermone Benton versuchen sich in Nizza als Heiratsschwindler. Im August soll Under The Cherry Moon auf DVD erscheinen und ich freue mich schon riesig die herrlichen Dialoge das erste Mal in englisch zu hören.

1995: SHOWGIRLS – 13 Nominations / 7 Wins (Two New RAZZIE Records!)

1999 wurde der Film ausserdem zum “Worst Picture of The Decade” gewählt.

Auf den Film bin ich erst durch ein Interview mit John Waters aufmerksam geworden, der Showgirls in den Himmel lobte. Natürlich bin ich sofort in die nächste Videothek gerannt und habe mir dieses Meisterwerk von Paul Verhoeven ausgeliehen. Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht.
Elizabeth Berkley ist extrem glamourös in der Hauptrolle als junge Tänzerin die nach Las Vegas kommt um den Durchbruch zu schaffen. Sie startet als Stripperin, bekommt jedoch bald eine große Rolle in einer angesehenen Show. Am Ende wird Showgirls merkwürdigerweise fast noch zum Krimi. Zusätzlich wird ein Erkennungsmerkmal für einen guten Film erfüllt: Kotzen innerhalb der ersten 15 Minuten (John-Waters-Interview-Weisheit).

2003: GIGLI and THE CAT-IN-THE-HAT: 9 Nominations each

Jedes Jahr nehme ich mir vor, den Gewinnerfilm anzusehen, habe es bisher aber selten getan. So hat im Jahr 2000 BATTLEFIELD EARTH mit John Travolta gewonnen und ich habe ihn bis heute nicht gesehen.
Die Nominierungen für 2003 sind veröffentlicht und von den beiden Filmen mit den meisten Nominierungen interessiert mich natürlich Gigli sehr. Der Benifer Film schlechthin. Da sich J-Lo und Ben getrennt haben, wird es keine Fortsetzung geben. Leider habe ich den Kinostart verpasst und mir bleibt wieder nur der beschwerliche Gang in die Videothek.
