Doc Nancy’s New Math Kwizz


Dear quizzers,

After a way too long break I finally found the time for a new mathematical quiz on the occasion of my birthday.

Exactly three years ago I celebrated my 25th birthday in the Australian summer. As you all know they have the cutest animals down under: wombats, possums, duckbill platypi and roos. I loved all of them. But most interesting I found a strange breed of chameleons I was able to observe at an outback farm. These chameleons are either black or silver or pink. But they don’t change their color in order to disguise themselves like ordinary chameleons they changed their color according to some strange mechanism.

Whenever two chameleons of different colors snuggle up together they switch to the third color. Like when a black and a siver chameloeon snuggle they both turn pink and so on. When two chameleons have the same color, nothing happens. As these cute little creatures need a lot of love, this mechanism provided a wonderfull natural phenomen. They changed their color back and forth and i was immediately mesmerized. But suddendly i realized that as soon as all chameleons on the farm have the same color they will not be able to change their color anymore. Stricken with fear i counted them. There were 13 black, 15 silver and 17 pink chameleons.

Then I started thinking, if it might be possible that these 45 chameleons all have the same color at some point because they snuggle up in an awkward order. What do you think: Is it possible that this happens – even if it is very unlikely – or is it generally impossible? Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have anymore questions. Which one is the fastest ball?

As I am a spokeswoman of the Year of Mathematics I am very busy these days to bring the infinite joy of numbers and calculations to the people. The highlight of this noble duty was my visit to the Maths Ship. Going there just felt like finally coming home. The visitors where mesmerized by the exhibition of those wonderful mathematical phenomena depicted in beautiful colors and shapes. They appreciated my further explanations and the crazy patterns of the wallpapers worked great with my outfit.
This experience told me that I am ready for another mathematical life counseling session. As always you can leave any of your personal problems in the comments section. I will give you the answer to your question from the mathematical point of view. No matter if you have problems in your love life, with your styling or whatever: There is always a formula that can help!

The Questionnaire


One of my dearest readers told me that he urgently needs another mathematical challenge from me. Thus, in addition to the counseling session I’ll introduce to you a famous mathematical problem called The Costume Jewelry Problem:
Imagine you’re on a game show and you have to choose one out of three doors. You know that behind two doors is only costume jewelry and behind the third door is real jewelry plus everything else you ever dreamed of. But you (unlike the host) don’t know what is behind which door. After you made your choice the host opens another door with costume jewelry behind it. Then he offers you to take the other still closed door instead of your first choice.
Now the question is: Is it an advantage to swap your choice or to stay by your first choice in order to increase the chances to win everything you ever dreamed of? Or doesn’t it make any difference at all?
There is no prize to win as the solution might be quite easy to google. But those among you who loved the quizzes might have great fun with this problem and get some insight to the strange world of probability theory.

Doc Nancy Is Back

Today, we spent a wonderful afternoon by the river Main. Doc Nancy was in her best mood when she got a ride on the BierBike, helping them cuties to keep the wheels spinning and the juices flowing. Who knew that chillin’ on a barrel could provide so much fun?

After I got my PhD I was ready to enjoy the experience of a daytime job. I felt my duty upon society and started working at a film production company. At the beginning it was all fun. It gave me the chance to wear all those lovely office outfits I always dreamed of, the internet connection worked great and I didn’t have to pay for my phone calls. But after a while I found out that they wanted me to do some serious work.

Don’t get me wrong, Doc Nancy is a hard working woman and knows how to deal with the struggles of life but this office hell was just too much. Deadlines, deadlines, deadlines. Thus, I quit the job and live on unemployment benefit now. This is great because I have enough time again for another mathematical life counseling session.

nachdem das letzte Quiz doch recht schwer war und ich manche Knobelfreunde fast in den Wahnsinn getrieben habe, ist dieses Quiz wieder leichter. Habt also keine Angst und lest erstmal die Textaufgabe.

Letzten Sommer war ich mit meinen Girls auf einer wunderbaren Bärinnen-Beach-Party an einem schönen Fluß. Wir waren hot’n’fierce und tanzten uns in Rage. Als ich dann doch etwas Hunger bekam, stellte ich mit Schrecken fest, daß das Honigbuffet auf der anderen Seite des Flußes war. Nerv!

Doch schnell begriff ich, daß die süßen Bärinnen absolut classy waren und einen Shuttle-Service eingerichtet hatten. Zwischen Party- und Buffetufer fuhren zwei Fähren hin und her, wobei beide Fähren immer an jedem Ufer genau eine halbe Stunde Pause machten. Als ich mich auf eine Fähre schwang, um zum Honigufer zu kommen, fiel mir auf, daß die beiden Fähren jeweils mit konstanter Geschwindigkeit fuhren. Die Fähre vom anderen Ufer startete gleichzeitig mit unserer Fähre. 360 m vom Partyufer entfernt kreuzte sich unser Weg mit dem der anderen Fähre. Ich wurde noch gieriger, als ich die honigverklebten Mäuler der dortigen Passagierinnen sah!

Am Buffetufer angekommen stürzte ich mich sofort auf den Honig. Die halbe Stunde Pause reichte mir natürlich, um mich bis zur Besinnungslosigkeit vollzustopfen und so konnte ich direkt wieder mit derselben Fähre zurückfahren. 200 m vom Buffetufer entfernt kreuzten wir wieder die andere Fähre. Schön vollgefreßen hatte ich jetzt endlich die Muße für ein paar mathematische Betrachtungen. Ich ließ nochmal die ganze Fahrerei Revue passieren und schwups hatte ich ausgerechnet, wie breit der Fluß ist. Genau das möchte ich jetzt auch von Euch wissen: Wie breit ist der Fluß?

Von der Geschichte krieg ich sofort wieder einen Honighieper. Hinterlaßt bitte Fragen und Lösungsvorschläge wie immer als Kommentare, damit alle davon profitieren können.
