They Call Her G-G

And I’m not talking about Gossip Girl here. It’s the Governor General I’m interested in. It all comes down to this: Queen Elisabeth II. has a lot to do with reigning over 16 countries, so she needs a Governor General in Canada.

I’m obsessed with the role of the G-G for several reasons:

  • Most importantly: There is only one person above the G-G, the Queen
  • The G-G is addressed as His/Her Excellency
  • The G-G has his/her own flag and it is stunning. I would like to get a dress made out of a fabric with that cute little lion printed all over.

Maybe one day I can become a G-G, too. I’m an immigrant lady, so I have one of the prerequisites. However, the G-G gets appointed on advice of the Canadian Prime Minister. Mmmmh. There should be a way!

Imagine Peace Tower

For the inauguration of the Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland, democracynow.org has an hour long interview with Yoko Ono. Dedicated to John Lennon, the tower shoots light into the sky and bears the inscription “œImagine Peace.” It will light up every year between October 9th, the day of Lennon’s birth, and December 8th, the day of his death.

Watch the interview here.
Thanks Alex.

Family Day at Mom’s House

I’m big into politics when it involves new holidays. After the re-election of the Ontario government on Wednesday a new holiday was proclaimed, Family Day. Happening at the 3rd Monday in February.

The first Family Day was introduced in Alberta in the 1990’s:
“The holiday was proclaimed by Alberta Premier Don Getty, in response to a drug scandal involving his son, Dale Getty, who had been arrested for possession of cocaine and was revealed to have cocaine addiction. Premier Getty was obviously embarrassed by the revelation and admitted publicly that he had neglected his family, saying that it was also important for all Albertans to take more care with their families.” (sources 1, 2)

Daheim ist doch am schoensten

I am so happy to be back in T.O.

I had the most useless stopover in Montreal and even missed my connecting flight. Anyhow, this gave me more time to study the Guardian:

“This has given rise to much speculation about the role that her husband, Bill, would play in a Hillary administration. He would be not only the first male consort of a president of the United States but also the first one to have been president himself – and as such would enjoy the same right as his wife to be greeted by a band playing “Hail to the Chief!” as he enters a room.
He would also be entitled, as are all ex-presidents, to be addressed as “Mr President”, so the waiter bringing in the Clintons’ morning coffee would presumably say “Good morning, Mr President” as well as “Good morning, Madam President” as he puts down the tray. We could be in for an orgy of sycophancy.”
