Zaldy & MJ

Only recently I found this interview with designer Zaldy Geco, who worked on the outfits for the Michael Jackson This Is It project. Head over to Business of Fashion for more photos (at the end of the posting). In another part of the interview Zaldy talks about his collaborations with Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani and others.

“It turns out that Michael had been advised to take more of a fashion look with his presentation, and he had asked to see designs from some really big names, including, I believe, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. My impression is that he got all these packages from these different designers and then he chose who he wanted to work with.
When he got my package, they called me right away and said he that Michael was jumping up and down screaming, saying “I’ve always wanted to do this! I’ve always wanted to do this!”

“And then of course there was the light-up outfit for Billie Jean, which was a collaboration with Philips Technology, which really, really made him the happiest. The last time I saw him was about six days before we were leaving for London, and I tried these pants on him and he was silent; completely stunned. After about thirty seconds, he said “It’s everything I’ve always wanted.”

About the 4-Ohh

The Rei Kawakubo chapter is one of the best in John Waters’ book Role Models (published in May). These few black and white pages have caused considerable damage over hurrr. I mean, not that I didn’t crave Comme des Garçons before, but now, the flood gates of hell (aka my purse) are wide open. I simply can not resist a CdG item any more (just spare me the CdG Play line).

Ok, here is one of the crucial paragraphs. And what I believe is also very important: You can never start too early. Gobble up some torn & combusted CdG BEFORE you hit the big 4-ohhh:

You don’t need fashion designers when you are young (…). But past the age of 40, you need all the help you can get. Now is the time for designers, and believe me, Rei Kawakubo has made it possible for older people to be as fashion daring as the young. “Too rich, too nuts?” Yesiree, these are Rei’s customers, and we are proud to be her cult members on “Planet Rei”. Rei Kawakubo was “the first to make polyester cost more than silk,” the model Linda Evangelista told me when I met her at a film festival in France. Rei is not a fashion designer; she is a magician.

The chapter about his friendship with Leslie van Houten is available at HuffPost.

Neo Reflector Babies

Disco Lashes

For the second time, I lost my Viktor & Rolf Shu Umera lashes this weekend in a drunk’n’drag accident. Today looked into buying them for a third time. Hoping it is going to be a charm.

That’s when I saw these babies: “inspired by architectural approach of future fashion, these elegant, silver coated lashes softly sparkle with moon shape sequins.”

And the shopping list is longer again.
Now, I need to work on making it shorter. WORK!

With The Hennies

On Saturday, El Bear Ho, Mary Messhausen and myself took part in a photo shoot for Canadian Vogue. We had our first splash at 4pm, to get in the mood for all the flashes. It was so much fun! We fell in love with the photographer Miguel and especially the very cute assistant, Housten (not sure if he told us his real name, though).

Anyways, after the shoot, we were in such a good mood that we headed to one of our favourite bars, The Henhouse. We arrived there at 8pm, the first patrons of the night. Getting the party started so early made us scream “Last Call” ever half an hour.

There are tons of pictures from the debaucherous night on facebook (not sure if you will be able to see them all). Here are just a few. I’m still hungover.

Me Like DIS

DIS magazine launched today. It’s onläne. It’s fashion. It’s art. It’s DIS.

Basically, I spent my whole day discovering their pages (pun intended). They first feature that caught my attention, was Multitasking. So many arms, so much to do. Check out the pictures and multiply your arms. Then, I found the CGI fashion story by Ryan Trecartin.

I got more and more disoriented, lost in the DIS pages.

Finally, I clicked on A Sunday With Susan. OMG, I screamed in excitement and wet myself (downstairs). The fashion shoot features Rumi Missabu (of The Cockettes) and Donna Personna (amongst others) in Susan Cianciolo dresses. Eons ago, I’ve written a quick blurb about Susan. Here are just 3 pictures from DIS magazine, be sure to check the whole story including a Q&A at the end:

I had never heard of Donna Personna before. But after watching her youtube promo reel, Join The Donna Party, I’m a fan forever. She also performs at one of my favourite bars EVER, Aunt Charlies Lounge in San Francisco. Here are some mini pics I took at ACL in June 2004: one and two. I have to go back soon. Like NOEWWW.

Also, Ryan Trecartin will be in Toronto next week for an artist talk on Tuesday and an opening at The Powerplant on Thursday.
